Box Caterpillar
There is an epidemic of this little beast around the Winchester and Chandler’s Ford areas and probably further afield. Keep an eye on your box hedges, do not ignore brown leaves.
This can be easily treated and dealt with.
Look for caterpillars and remove them, importantly look for the eggs and get rid of these. Cut your box hedge back neatly (so you have less plant to treat) and apply Xen Tari, readily available on Amazon. I have box hedging in both my front and back gardens, this year has been the first year that the moth has visited my garden. I have dealt with it and no plants have been lost.
ConsideringWork For 2022?
The demand due to Covid and the desire for much improved outside space is still pushing landscaper lead times out considerably.
I am currently working with 3 teams of landscapers, they are all booking intoSpring / Summer 2022. Please work on the basis of an 8 month lead time for landscaping.
Future clients are more than welcome to use landscapers of their choice if unable to wait. If you find a good landscaper with availability, inspect work and by all means send me photographs of their work if you are unsure.
My Workload
I live in Oliver’s Battery, Winchester and have reduced the area I cover to Winchester, Chandler’s Ford, Romsey and some of Southampton. Please enquire if you live outside this area and I will consider my workload at the time, if I am too busy I may be able to refer you to another designer.
Over the last 18 months I have experienced a considerable increase in budgets, particularly from Winchester based clients. However I have always positioned myself within the market to be affordable. Planting
I have been using the same supplier for 20 years and have an excellent working relationship with them. Planting is a very important part of the process. If you do not need help with design but your garden lacks planting, I am very happy to help you with your planting scheme – I provide fully itemised spreadsheets for plants supplied and can set these out for you to plant.
Material Demand & prices
There is still a shortage of a lot of materials and material pricing has fluctuated ‘up’ due to supply and demand. Forward planning is essential.

Suppliers and samples
I have predominantly specified paving and composite decking supplied by LondonStone. I have sample boxes from this supplier. www.londonstone.co.uk
There is a new local supplier called Forest Stone based at the NewForest Fencing site in Nursling. They specialise in porcelain and natural stone paving. I have now specified their paving several times and look forward to working closely with this new local supplier, you can find more information about them here - www.foreststone.uk.
